I received a phone call yesterday 24th June at 5.45 pm saying that the reason for the call was that I had corrupted files in my computer and also required an antivirus program to get rid of them. I was told to press the logo key next to the control key and an engineer would talk me through the solution.
After 15 minutes I was asked to pay for a system for 5 years either a silver or a gold package.I refused and then all programs on my computer were opened and closed by this engineer. I panicked and shut down and come off the phone as well. When I rebooted I have lost all my pictures and my documents files which are irreplaceable.
This person on the phone knew my name tel no and my email address. This was a harrowing experience as i am a pensioner and only use the computer for pleasure. I can only suppose that they were after banking details.
Unfortunately i could not get the number calling as my phone only records the last number and i had a call shortly after this when I had to leave the house to collect my wife by car.The so called engineer was called Brad Watkins and the phone caller sounded American but was difficult to hear as there was a lot of background noise and people talking quite close to him.
ADMIN * I added a possible phone number that I found on Microsoft's website warning people of this phone phishing epidemic (07) 5641 2259 , 973-735-5438.
