Over the last year, many men and women have attempted to take a stand for their right to marry freely and equally, heterosexual, homosexual, or none of those. What I've noticed though is the fluctuation and increase in people claiming to be bisexual when in actuality they have no idea what that means. It definitely doesn't mean being extremely promiscuous, and it doesn't mean you'll settle for anything. It means that you're attracted to something in both genders and attraction doesn't always lead to sex, as any intelligent human being knows.
I'm bisexual and have been for as long as I can remember. I like to say "I was bi before it was cool." to really irritate the teenyboppers who make out with someone of their own gender for attention. Bisexuality has been so misconstrued, to the point of straight and gay individuals BOTH shunning this sexuality group. It's a toss up whether we're accepted into one category or another because we find both sexes alluring. I'm not a slut, which is one common misconception applied to bisexuality; that we seek pleasure from any outlet, no matter with who or what.
Another common misconception comes from the majority of straight men with girl-on-girl fantasies. I've had a steady boyfriend for over 4 years now and we've never had a 3some. I was very upfront with him from the beginning, because although I love the touch of a woman too, I'm a jealous person and I do believe in monogamy. Hard to wrap your mind around? There's nothing more irritating than being a bisexual woman in a relationship with a man and to hear "Wanna have a 3some?!" No, thanks. Although there are some bisexual people who might and that's their personal choice.
My main complaint is the negative associations with bisexuality. You CAN be attracted to members of both sex because in the long run, after the physical intimacy, you're left with a person that you either love, tolerate, or despise. Which is the basis of most relationships, gay or straight. It's hard to have been created a certain way and hope that people who have gone through the same thing will understand, only to be rejected by sexuality categories based on your own.
The kids who do it for attention and laugh about it later or post it on facebook... Katy Perry who has admitted to it only when she's drunk... The implications that bisexuals will have sex with anything... These are all reasons why bisexuality is discriminated against by homosexuals and heterosexuals. Apparently we CHOSE to straddle the fence, and I can tell you that this wasn't something I chose to be. It was apart of me I chose not to ignore, that much is true.
Bisexuality shouldn't be condemned as a whole for the actions of so few.
