Irena Sendler was born in Poland in 1910 and was a social worker who is most known for smuggling 2,500 Jewish children and infants out of the Warsaw Ghetto during World War II. She carefully documented the name of each child's parent and hid the list in a glass jar in her back yard so she could re-unite the children with their parents once the war ended. In 1943 she was arrested by the Gestapo and was severely tortured and sentenced to death for which she bribes the guards whom eventually let her go free.
