The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, aka the Pacific Trash Vortex is located in the North Pacific Ocean. The area is twice the size of Texas and was discovered in 1998. About 80% of the trash comes from land based sources and the other 20% comes from ships. Currents carry the debris from the west coast of North America and from the east coast of Asia.

Abby said: The issues that we are facing today in the world are global issues meaning we are all affected, everyone in the world. Trying to figure out what is more important between obtaining natural resources and preserving the environment is a difficult decision to make. Although I realize the importance of obtaining natural resources to help feed our growing populations especially in developing countries. But I also recognize the need to preserve our earth for our children and grandchildren.
By obtaining natural resources we produce energy to have cars, gas, and heat. Other natural resources are minerals. Minerals can be defined as naturally occurring substances obtained from the ground. They are coal, petroleum, natural gas, iron, copper, gold, etc. They are also absorbed up by plants from the Earth’s surface and transferred to humans through food. A different resource is wood. It can be cut and processed to make furniture.
Wood is also used for cooking and also as fuel to produce heat for warmth.
Why is it important to protect the environment? The number one reason, global warming. Turnouts the more we pollute the air the warmer the planet gets. Which is causing the ice in the arctic circle to melt. Another reason to protect the environment is to protect the animals. They can be used as a source of food and other things. Because of not protecting the environment we are endangering all types of animals.
Both choices are extremely important. So I'm not choosing between them. I think that we should create an alternate form of energy. Alternative energy refers to energy sources that have no undesired consequences such for example fossil fuels or nuclear energy. Alternative energy sources are renewable and are thought to be "free" energy sources. They all have lower carbon emissions, compared to conventional energy sources. These include Wind Energy, Solar Energy, Hydroelectric Energy sources.
