Bill Collectors

Afni Collections Inc extortion schemes

settlement
I have been receiving this letter from a collection agency called 'Afni Collections Inc' demanding that I settle on an outstanding bill to the sum of $2,550.00 to AT&T. The thing that caught my eye is #1 I have two accounts in good standing with AT&T AND the fact that they only wanted me to $100 to settle the account. So I googled this Afni Collections company and found out that it is a scam. I have to admit at first I almost paid it thinking maybe this was a bill from many years ago when I once got behind on some things. I thought to myself it is only $100, I might as well pay it. I am so glad I looked this company up, they are known scammers. In fact a columnist for the Miami Herald even wrote an article about this company writing that this company in famous for scamming people by telling them they have an outstanding bill and they would report them to the credit bureau causing damage to your credit. They are known for lying to consumers and harassing people when they do not pay the fictitious bill.

On June 21, the Federal Trade Commission issued a press release to warn consumers about extortion schemes such as this. It focused on an English-language instruction course that was in direct violation of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act by falsely claiming that debts were owed to this collector.

At ripoffreport.com, Afni is well known. I found about 255 reports from consumers all over the country who have been in situations similar to mine. Afni asks them to pay bills dating back to the 1990s from different AT&T companies. Many of the consumers said that when they protested, the collection agency backed off.

I have NEVER had any debts unpaid and my credit score is very high. SO.. I never answer my phone at all! They always leave messages, asking for (blank). I have never had anything mailed to me, so this is just low key harrassment, since all that they really do is just call my number.

They employ over 6000 people in states all over the country, and even have an international presence. Can their collectors make mistakes? Sure. Do collectors sometimes step over the line? Sure. However, the company is very real.

Buddy said: I received a bill from Afni last week stating I owe on an old Verizon account; in the amount of $450.23 and that they will settle for $95.12. The account number they claim is for a Verizon phone number in NY.

This is very interesting because I have never had Verizon and never lived in NY.

Bill Collectors

a Collection agency or bill collector is a business that operates as agents of the original creditor and tries to collect the debt for a fee or percentage of the total amount. Debt buyers purchase the outstanding debt for next to nothing and than try to collect the monies owed. These agencies can be very aggressive and in some cases threatening therefore there are other agencies such as the Fair Debt Collection Act that oversees these agencies.
